10 cent refunds for beverage containers - keeping up in Australia
Sep 08, 202610 cents! Get ya 10 cents! For beverage cans - all around the nation
But who can keep up!? It's different everywhere
Every Australian State and Territory now has some form of 10 cent refund for beverage containers.
QLD has historically had the most inclusive scheme - but jurisdictions are hot on the heels (or thongs) of the sunshine state’s CDS inclusions.
Because when Queensland is leading (anything!) … you know things ain’t right.
So what's the go?
Let's get what I think of as the old 'Recycling State of Origin' out of the way: NSW vs SA.
They're neck and neck - if anything, like a joined force!
Each state’s scheme is set to expand from "late 2027", to accept:
- Wine and spirits glass bottles
- Cordials and juice concentrate containers
- Larger containers of up to three litres of beverages that are already in the scheme, like flavoured milk, fruit and vegetable juice
The Top End
The Northern Territory expanded on July 1st to include all beverage containers up to 3 litres, which will include wine and spirit bottles, plain milk containers - including long life milk.
Go West - and expand thy Scheme
Western Australia also turned a new chapter du bottle, can and container.
The expansion includes almost all beverage containers between 150 millilitres (ml) and 3 litres, other than plain milk and registered health tonics. Including containers for:
- wine
- spirits
- beer and cider
- sprit-based mixed drinks
- cordial, fruit and vegetable juices and flavoured milk
- soft drinks, sports drinks and water
Capital Happenings
Don't forget the ACT - expanding theirs in a similar fashion by "no earlier than mid-2027"
Tassie tinnies now collected
And in the grand scheme of things, Tassie only just got theirs in 2025, so give them a break :)

That's a wrap, for now. It's a dynamic space.
